Fairy godmothers are needed to help send Cinderella to the ball.
Volunteers at Hawera’s Kai Kitchen have started the “Cinderella Programme” in a bid to help year 13 youths who lack the financial means to pay for their own ball tickets and gear.
At least 10 teenagers are expected to need help with an outfit, hair, make-up and a ride to their Hawera High School ball on June 11. Project organiser and Kai Kitchen head Rochelle Steer said the goal was to give the teens a one-off experience they would never forget.
She has been impressed with the offers of help so far received.

“Tairoa Lodge have come on board and they have donated the use of their cottage for the day, most of them probably haven’t been to Tairoa Lodge before… it’s beautiful there so I think that’s really nice,” she said.
“We’ve got three hairdressers on board…one of them went to school here and her parents couldn’t afford to send her to the ball.”
About 50 dresses and many pairs of shoes and handbags have been donated.
Nail Studio 38 has volunteered to help with make-up and nails but Steer said transport, corsages and someone to pay for entry tickets were still needed.
Steer said the youth chosen and their families would be discreetly offered help via the service and could then make their own decisions about whether or not to accept support for the event.
The Kai Kitchen provides free lunches to up to 50 school children around South Taranaki every weekday during term time.
